SMS character counter

Type or paste a text to see how many characters it has, how many parts it will go out in, and which characters push it into Unicode. It counts exactly the way the CaptiFi Connect dashboard does.

Merge fields such as {first_name} are counted as typed here. The real length depends on each contact's details.

How long can a text message be?

One SMS holds 160 characters from the standard GSM-7 set, which covers the English alphabet, numbers, everyday punctuation and a handful of accented letters such as é, è, ñ and ü. Go past 160 and the message is split. Each part then holds 153 characters, because a few are taken up by the information the phone needs to stitch the parts back in order.

If even one character in the message isn't in the standard set, the whole text is sent as Unicode instead. A Unicode part holds 70 characters, or 67 once the text is split, so an emoji in a 100 character message turns one part into two.

Characters that switch a text to Unicode

Emoji are the obvious ones. Less obvious are the curly quotes and long dashes that word processors and phones put in automatically, the single-character ellipsis, and accented letters outside the standard set, such as á, ê and ô. They look almost the same as the plain versions on screen, which is why texts so often cost more than people expect.

The counter names every character that caused the switch. For quotes, dashes and the ellipsis it can swap in the plain versions with one click.

Characters that count as two

A few characters are in the standard set but live in its extension table, so each one takes two places: € [ ] { } ~ | ^ and \. They keep the text in the cheaper standard set, but a message with lots of them reaches the part limit sooner.

Merge fields and personalised texts

A merge field such as {first_name} is replaced with each contact's own details when the text goes out, so the real length changes from person to person. A long surname can push one person's copy into a second part. Leave some room under the limit when you personalise, and the dashboard works out the true cost for each recipient when you send.

Questions people ask

How many characters can one text message hold?

160 characters from the standard GSM-7 set, or 70 if the message needs Unicode. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 standard or 67 Unicode characters, and the phone joins them back together.

Why does my text say Unicode when I have not used any emoji?

Something else outside the standard set has crept in. Curly quotes, long dashes and the single ellipsis character are the usual ones, often pasted from a word processor. The counter lists them and can swap them for plain versions.

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Yes. Every space and line break is a character, and each one counts towards the part limit like a letter does.

Why do some characters count as two?

The euro sign, square and curly brackets, the tilde, the vertical bar, the caret and the backslash are in an extension table of the standard set. Each needs an escape code in front of it, so it takes two places in the part.

Is this the same count CaptiFi Connect charges for?

Yes. The counter runs the same code as the CaptiFi Connect dashboard and billing, and one credit pays for one part to a UK mobile.
