Use case

SMS marketing campaigns

Text an offer, an event or a new menu to the people who've asked to hear from you. Build the list, write the text once and send it now or at a time you choose, with the opt-out line added for you.

How do SMS marketing campaigns work?

An SMS campaign is one text sent to a list of contacts who've agreed to marketing, usually with each person's name merged in. In CaptiFi Connect you pick a list, write the text, choose an approved sender name or leave it on our default sender, then send now or schedule it. The opt-out line goes on automatically and STOP replies are handled for you.

What makes a campaign text work

A campaign text gets a couple of seconds on a lock screen, so lead with the reason you're texting and make sure people can tell who it's from. Give the one detail that matters, such as the date or the deadline, and finish with what to do next, whether that's booking, ringing you or showing the text at the till.

Timing matters as much as wording. Pick a sensible hour for the people on your list, because an offer at 10am reads very differently from the same offer at 10pm. Scheduling lets you write the campaign when you have time and send it when they do.

Watch the length too. A campaign that runs to two parts costs twice as much across the whole list, and one emoji can push a one-part text into two. Draft it on the Send SMS page, which counts characters, parts and credits as you type.

Choosing who it comes from

Campaigns go out through our licensed A2P route, under an approved sender name so the text shows as your business, or under our default sender if you leave it on Default. A name is recognisable at a glance but can't take replies, and that matters for opt-outs, because 'Reply STOP' only works if people can reply. If most of your marketing goes out under a name, change the opt-out wording in Settings to something people can act on, such as an email address. For anything you want answers to, text people one to one from Send SMS or the API, and their replies come back to your inbox.

Our staff check sender names before you can use them, including against the MEF SenderID Protection Registry, so request yours well before the campaign you need it for.

Running campaigns through the API

Campaigns can also be created through the API with a list, the text, an optional sender name and a send time, and you can follow their progress or cancel them before they go. That suits businesses that keep their marketing lists in their own systems: sync the list through the contacts and lists endpoints, then start the campaign.

Test keys can't launch campaigns, so try a new campaign on a short list of your own numbers first.

Features you'll use

What a campaign uses in CaptiFi Connect:

  • Contacts and lists, with CSV import and a report of any rows that were skipped.
  • Merge fields: {first_name}, {last_name}, {full_name}, {phone} and {email}.
  • Campaigns sent now or scheduled, with progress, delivery counts and cancel before sending.
  • An opt-out line added automatically, with wording you can edit.
  • Automatic STOP handling and an opt-out list checked on every send.

Rules that apply

Marketing texts fall under PECR. You need each person's specific consent before texting them marketing, unless the soft opt-in applies: you took their number during a sale or negotiations for a sale, you're only marketing your own similar products or services, and you gave them a simple, free way to refuse at the time and in every text since.

Every marketing text has to make clear who it's from and offer a simple way to opt out. Campaigns in CaptiFi Connect add 'Reply STOP to opt out' on its own line unless you turn it off, and the line isn't doubled up if your text already ends with it. Keep a record of who agreed to marketing and when. CaptiFi Connect handles the opt-outs, but the consent is yours to show.

Who runs SMS campaigns

Pubs and restaurants announcing events and new menus, venues selling tickets, salons filling quiet days, shops with a sale on. If you've got a list of customers who've said yes to hearing from you, a text is about as direct as marketing gets.

Sample texts

Merge fields in braces are filled from each contact. The part count is worked out the way the platform bills it.

Questions people ask

Do I need consent to send marketing texts?

Yes, unless the soft opt-in applies. PECR requires specific consent for marketing texts to individuals, including sole traders. The soft opt-in covers existing customers who bought or asked about something similar from you and were given a chance to opt out at the time and in every text since.

Does CaptiFi Connect add the opt-out line for me?

Yes. Campaigns add 'Reply STOP to opt out' on its own line by default. You can edit the wording in Settings or turn the line off for a campaign, and it isn't added twice if your text already ends with it.

Can I buy a list of numbers and text them?

Not for marketing to individuals without their consent. The ICO says bought-in lists can't rely on the soft opt-in, so you'd need specific consent from each person, and our acceptable use policy doesn't allow spam.

What happens when someone replies STOP?

Their number goes on your opt-out list straight away, any texts still waiting to go to them are cancelled and refunded, and later campaigns skip them without charging you.

How much does a campaign cost?

One credit per SMS part per person, so a one-part text to 500 people uses 500 credits. Numbers on your opt-out list aren't charged. Packs start at £25 for 500 credits (5p a text) and fall to 3.5p on the biggest pack, plus VAT; the pricing page has the table.
